What happens

Black disc of the Moon surrounded by the Sun’s glowing white corona during a total solar eclipse
Totality on 21 August 2017 over Madras, Oregon: only while the Moon covers the whole Sun does the faint corona become visible to the naked eye. Photo: NASA/Aubrey Gemignani

In a solar eclipse the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and its shadow falls on part of Earth, so it is only visible from that region. Never look at the Sun without certified eye protection.
