How these numbers are calculated

Contact times, durations and the path are calculated with Astronomy Engine from the positions of the Sun and the Moon on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, at sea level. Every build compares the path with NASA’s predictions (within 3 km on the central line and 5 km at the limits) and local contact times with the US Naval Observatory (within 10 s). Astronomy Engine uses the Moon’s mean radius, so durations come out a few seconds longer than NASA’s (up to 5 s in the tests). Mountains and valleys on the lunar limb are not modelled. Weather is not included.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 visible?

Totality is visible along a narrow path crossing Morocco, Spain, Gibraltar, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Outside the path a partial eclipse is visible over a much wider region. The page for each place gives the percentage covered.

How long does totality last?

Up to 6 min 28 s on the central line near Al Qūşīyah. The duration falls towards the edges of the path and is shorter at both ends of the path.

Do I need eclipse glasses?

Yes. During the partial phases, and everywhere outside the path, the Sun must only be viewed through certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) or a proper solar filter. Only during totality itself, when the Sun is completely covered, can it be viewed without protection.

When is the next total solar eclipse after this one?

The next total solar eclipse is on July 22, 2028.
