About Astrotempo

Astrotempo answers one question for any place on Earth: what can I see in the sky tonight? It shows when it gets dark, which planets are up and where, the Moon’s phase and times, clouds and aurora chances, coming eclipses and meteor showers, and a 3D view of the sky above you, in six languages.

The name

Astrotempo joins the Greek astron, star, with the Italian tempo, which means both time and weather. It is the sister site of Heliotempo, which does the same for the Sun.

Who is behind it

I’m Maja Dobnik Kočevar, a software developer from Maribor, Slovenia. I design, build and run Astrotempo myself, as I do Heliotempo. I care about pages that load quickly, work properly on a phone, and give numbers you can trust.

The existing night-sky sites have excellent data but are often hard to use, especially on a small screen. Astrotempo tries to give the same data with a clear answer first and the details after it.

You can find more of my work on my portfolio.

How the site works

  • Calculated, not copied. Positions and times are calculated with published algorithms, and every build is checked against NASA JPL Horizons, the US Naval Observatory and NASA’s eclipse tables. See the methodology.
  • Every source credited. Star catalogues, images, forecasts and other data come from public sources, listed with their licences on the sources page.
  • Privacy by design. Your location stays in your browser. Forecasts are requested directly by your browser with rounded coordinates. Analytics and advertising cookies are only used with your permission where the law requires it.
  • Fast and light. Pages are static, and the 3D views load only when you open them.

How it is funded

Astrotempo is free to use. It is funded by advertising from Google AdSense. Ads never influence the calculations or the content, and there are no affiliate links or paid placements.

Corrections and ideas
